Steps in Endodontic Therapy (Root Canal)

Cross section showing infected nerves and blood vessels

The infection in the nerves and blood vessels is what causes all the pain.

Infected tissue is removed

In order to relieve the pain, the infected tissue must be completely removed. This is done under local anestetic.

The tooth is cleaned and shaped for the filling material

The cavity left after the infection has been removed, is then cleaned and polished so the replacement material will stick, and not become reinfected.

The filling material is placed

A special filling material is packed into the cavity where the nerves and blood vessels had previously been. Filling this area prevents any new infection from starting there

The final restoration is placed on the tooth

The old tooth is now finished off with the appropriate restorative technique. This can be a cap, or a traditional filling.
