What to expect at your first dental appointment:A child's first appointmentFor your child's first dental appointment, we suggest that they come in around the age of 2 or 3. By this time, your child should have a full set of primary teeth. If there is a problem with the child's teeth earlier, please bring them in then. The first appointment is called the happy visit. The purpose of this visit is to get your child oriented with the dental office and all of the equipment that we use. First we gather all of the medical information from you. Next, your child will go for a ride in the dental chair. This is usually very exciting for them. We also show them all of the tools that we will use to clean their teeth. Our tooth polisher, Mr. Thirsty the suction tool, and the air/water syringe will be demonstrated at this time. If everything goes well at this appointment, your child will be booked to come back to have a cleaning done by one of our dental hygienists. Sometimes the cleaning can be done during the happy visit. But it's often a bit overwhelming for your child to have everything done at once. An adult's first appointmentFor an adult, the first visit at our office is much more involved. First, we obtain a complete medical and dental history from you. We need to know of any medical conditions or dental concerns that you may have. Next, two different types of x-rays are usually taken. The first one is called a panoramic x-ray. It takes a picture of all of the teeth, sinuses, and facial bones. It is used for an overall assessment of the teeth and bones. The next x-rays are called bitewings. One x-ray is taken on each side of the mouth for a close up view of the area between the teeth. This is done to check for cavities and failing restorations. At this point, either Dr. Stewart or Dr. Chari will come in and do a complete examination of your teeth, gums and supporting tissues. It will then be determined if there are any dental issues that need to be addressed. You will be advised of any at-home procedures, you can do, to help prevent decay and disease. After all of your data is collected, a treatment plan will be explained to you. This is to let you know exactly what needs to be done to help you achieve dental health. Sometimes an additional consultation appointment needs to be arranged. Dr. Stewart or Dr. Chari will sit down with you to discuss treatment, explain procedures and answer questions. After all of the initial exams and data collection is complete, an appointment(s) will be set up to have oral hygiene instruction and a cleaning done by one of our dental hygienists.
